Well , what a great day out.

The Boconnoc horse enduro is a little different to most on the calender in that its a two day event . This means that Jeff and a couple of others gave up their friday to come down and mark out the track . The event organiser hands a marked map to the TRF and the competitors and the track is marked according to this . Of course Jeff has been doing this for years and knows most of it my memory anyway .

The track is marked using a series of Orange flags and orange loops of fabric which are looped on trees etc . The track system is very easy to follow - keep the flags to your left , two flags means to look for a change of direction and flags on both sides means its two way traffic.

I was down to help on the sunday and was asked to get there for 8am . Once I arrived I saw Jeremy , Jeff , Robin , Brett and a few mores whos names I just couldnt get to stick in my brain . First job of the day is to ride the course ( such a hardship) to make sure all the flags and tapes are still in place from yesterday . The loop at this event was 20 miles long ! You have to keep a reasonable pace as it has been known for the horses to catch you up .

Many of the fields will have livestock in but during the race there are gate openers there to let the horses in and out and not the livestock. At this event a farmer had let a load of young bullocks out on the sat eve so extra gate openers had to be arranged.

Back to the paddock for tea and a free breakfast bap . The TRF gets free vouchers for the burger van from the EGB organisers .
Usually some of the TRF guys would circulate the track while the races are underway but due to the miserable weather no one did . We were on call and a few went out to sort errant cows and a badger set that had made a large hole in the track .
Once the last horse has gone out we all set off to clear the track of all the markings - this was the best bit of the day , the track was seriously slippy and muddy . Because of the number of TRF there it means you only need to stop for every sixth marker so you can get a good pace up . The two quads ended being the beast of burdens once our bikes were full of flags and tapes.

Would I do another ? Damn right im gonna - its the only time that you will get to ride these areas legally and its pretty tricky / fun in places . During the race is nice and chilled with some good banter too . I did 60 miles all in so plenty of riding time too . Oh and you get a tenner for fuel as well as free food . I will do a saturday at the next one to find out what the marking out day is like . I will prob take the Honda for that as noise isnt such a problem when the horses arent about .
Poor little KE had a hard day in deep mud with some steep climbs both up and down . Its getting a bit tired now and smoking well - time for a good clean and a top end refresh i think .

So if you fancy helping Jeff and his crew please email him on here , volunteers always welcome and its nice to see what the TRF do behind the scenes .

Cracking write up Phullup. Bit of a downer regarding the weather. When me and Bern did it we had to sit in the shade as the sun was out all day, that makes a hell of a difference. Im sure you had some great banter tho, some great characters amongst those names.

Well done for helping out the horsey chaps matey.
