Dorset / Hampshire ride

Two weeks ago the Norton owners club had a rally in the New Forest with a display at Sammy Miller's museum. I took the bike to Bournemouth by van and stayed  with my friend. I had planned a route to New Millton using what lanes I could find along the general direction of the route. We enjoyed the route managing to find some mud and a good deep ford. A bonus was coming out of one lane and seeing a sign on the other side of the road "Unsuitable for motors" that was a challenge not to be ignored: as the lane got narrower and the branches lower we came to a sign warning "If you drive past this point you will not get back"! Another challenge. We only bottled out at the bottom when the lane disappeared into a bog so we spun round in the mud and back up the hill and carried on on our planned route finishing with a lane which ended just round the corner rom the museum. If there had been an award for the muddiest bike we would have won it. Seeing all the shiny Nortons on display outside the museum, my friend thought that she was at a meeting for OCD sufferers!

The museum is well worth a visit with a fantastic collection of bike with some real exotica including a 50cc 4cyl road racer and, of course, some of the bikes which Sammy rode.
